Cost of Living Sydney (Generally Australia)

By: Arpan Khadka

It is a very important question to know the cost of living in Australia especially if you are in need to save up for your college fee and have no backup financial support to rely upon. Knowing the cost of living for an overseas student can help you a lot to save up as you can plan and avoid problems.

This can look almost impossible to save up for personal expenses and college fees at the same time especially in one of the most expensive cities in the world but as we all know a lot of people have already come and done it and shown it's possible. I will try to show some of the basic general expenses as a student and expenses bare apart from their tuition fee.

The first and topmost expenses thing that a student must bear is their housing or rent. For some you might be staying with friends and families, are very fortunate not to have to pay rent. As rent is going to be most expensive after the tuition fee for a student. Generally, rent tends to be expensive around Sydney CBD and the further you go from the main city lower the rent gets. So generally renting 1 bedroom apartment can cost anywhere like $650 PER WEEK in the city to anywhere around $400 PER WEEK in a suburb. You can see the rent difference. But for overseas students even renting a place by themselves can be expensive so they generally tend to share their apartments or even room with other people. So, you can expect anywhere around $100 to $125 WEEKLY in sharing room without utilities and anywhere around $180 to $220 for a single room that is in a suburb 20 min away from Sydney CDB in train. Generally, as people colleges or work tend to be around Sydney CBD is that they try to stay in the best possible place to commute to cities in student life.

The next expensive stuff that you might need after your fee and rent is your food. This might look silly and look like it is not going to be a problem at the start but trust me this can be your drawback at a young age when you don’t know how to cook and rely on eating outside meals. As you know Australia is a multi-cultural place especially the cities with there are bustling food courts, fancy restaurants, and cafes it is hard not to enjoy a meal there. It is not like you can’t enjoy a meal, but we tend to develop a habit of spending on these luxurious and delicious meals too much. Not only that with fast-food restaurants in every food step in all suburbs and access to grabbing restaurant meals from the couch with help of apps like UberEATS, Deliveroo sounding tempting you will never even realise it hampering your account. Eating out can generally cost around $10 to $20 per person per meal in a typical food outlet. If you require 3 meals a day and spend an average of $45 eating out it can cost anywhere $315 in a week. So, to save it's highly recommended to eat at home with groceries for the student can generally cost weekly of $80 weekly on average. You can typically shop in the top two supermarkets Woolworths and Coles that is distributed widely throughout Australia. You also have an option to go to Asian stores and if the lucky option of even south Asian shops depending in suburbs.

Now coming at third is your commute around the city as an overseas student. If are an overseas student, likely, you will not be getting your transposition at the start as expenses related to that can vary upon type and models. In this, I will be telling about public transportation costs in Sydney as generally, you can expect to spend anywhere around $50 to $70 on a daily commute depending on how often you use it. There is an alternative option like Uber and Ola which can cost anywhere around $1 for every min varying in the situation but is very expensive. So, for your commute to work, college and home you should be ready to pay $50 to $70 for your commute.

Let me now explain about the utilities that I mentioned with the rent. The utilities that we use are divided among members who share the place per head. This generally includes electricity and gas. In most cases, the water bill is paid by the owner, and it is free of cost for tenants. Unlike other costs which occur every week, the utility bills occur only once every three years. This bill is generally around $300 for electricity and $250 for gas depending on usage. For a student, they are expected to pay anywhere around $100 for electricity and $65 for gas every three months.

Other expenses that usually occur will be for networking that is your phone plan and internet plan. Your phone plan for just your sim can cost $40 monthly with unlimited talk time and text in Australia and 50Gb of data. Whereas internet plans for an apartment can cost $60 and will be divided per head. So an individual can expect a cost of $20 of internet monthly. In this calculation, I will not include your expenses like shopping for clothing, gadgets, travel and personal item as this cost can range and vary according to people choices and preferences. So by only including the minimum expenses, I will show expense calculation of how we can know expenses and help plan and save up for tuition fees and other necessary expenses.
